Emergencies

What to know before an emergency happens — first aid basics and when to seek urgent care.

← Back to Patient Education

Knowing what to do before an emergency happens can make all the difference. Our emergency library collects parent-friendly resources on the situations families most want to be prepared for, so you can recognize a problem early and respond with confidence.

Topics include recognizing and responding to anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction), choking prevention and first aid for infants and children, the basics of CPR, and understanding croup and when it may need hospital care. You will also find quick reference to the Poison Control Hotline and guidance on when a situation calls for emergency medical services.

This information is for general education and preparedness — it does not replace hands-on first aid or CPR training, which we encourage every caregiver to complete. In a true emergency, always trust your instincts and call for help right away.

In a Medical Emergency

If your child is having a life-threatening emergency, call 911 right away. For poisoning, call the national Poison Control Hotline at 1-800-222-1222.
